The novel where we meet Harriet Vane, mystery writer accused of poisoning her ex-lover just like she wrote in one of her novels. We are introduced to Harriet via Lord Peter's infatuation with her and him realizing that he's fallen for the one woman who probably will not readily accept his marriage proposal since she's standing trial for murder and facing certain death. Strong poison has a few old acquaintances coming back, Miss Climpson, whom I simply adore and her merry band of women working for justice and valor. I found it amusing to see Lord Peter somewhat unhinged about his whole "falling in love" with what is, all things considered, almost a doomed woman. I loved the intrigue, I loved the characters and I'm definitely looking forward to more of Lord Peter's courtship of Harriet. But since I'm rationing my reading of the Lord Peter series to last me until the end of the year, I'm not plunging ahead to Five Red Herrings until September.
