A very satisfying novel. The alternate time line is coherent and subtly put. I needed to get used to the vocabulary and the whole range of Jewish faiths that Chabon's put into this noirish tale of the end of an impossible arrangement. Israel didn't last and Jews are in exile all over the world. Sitka, Alaska. Where the Jews of the world took refuge after WW ll. A temporary refuge since the land returns to the US after 60 years. It's 60 years later minus 5 or so weeks. Homicide detective Meyer Landsman follows the case of the murder of the son of well know and powerful rabbi. Road blocks, politics, conspiracy, and ultimately redemption in finding freedom are a few of the troubles Landsman faces. I enjoyed the story, the style, the exoticism, the way the alternate time line holds together. It's really worth reading.
