The Road (Oprah's Book Club)

The Road - Cormac McCarthy It's bleak, it's depressing, it's dark but man, it's also tender, it's lyrical, it's this against all odds I will protect you and love you relationship between this father and his very young son living in this post apocalyptic United States. Traveling on these nameless roads, barely surviving, hungry, cold, afraid. So afraid. I totally entered this universe. The writing, the prose made me feel like I was walking with them, pushing, pulling this battered shopping mart cart thru snow and mountain terrain. It's heart breaking. I know it can't end well. The Deus Ex Machina ending is a bit disappointing in a way but it's open ended enough for me for it to go both ways : good and bad. Besides how much time does humanity have anyway in such a world? No food, no way to grow food, scavenging can not go on forever, hence the alternative food source that gave me nightmares and even that is a dead end ultimately because of diseases. I'm glad I read it. So far this year, it's the book that had the most impact on me both emotionally and intellectually. The writing is amazing, it reads like poetic prose.
