This portrayal of England in the 1970 in a working-class blue collar town is both fascinating and somewhat foreign. We follow the teenage years of a group of friends Benjamin the writer, Philip the historian, Doug the leader, Harding, the joker. Coe succeeds in making us care about the love triangles, the angst, the deception all mirrored in their parents lives also. Adultery, depression, violence are all part of their lives. We read about the strikes, the IRA bombings, the racisms, the climb to power of the Conservatives. Coe's writing flows and the insertion of excerpts of the School Paper, of diaries works into bringing us closer to the characters. The flashback, flash forward thing is a bit annoying and so is trying to figure out who's kids are Sophie and Patrick. Looking forward to the next book which bring the story of the 1990 and probably coming from Patrick's of the family since this one was from Sophie's.
