Easy and entertaining book. The reader tags along with Jacob when he jumps on a train in 1931 to escape the sorrow, the pain of losing everything. He ends up jumping in a circus train. Becomes the circus' vet and find a strange "family". Gruen depicts American circus life during the depression with vivid images and a simple style that engages the reader to turn the page and the next to read what comes next. The jumps between old man Jacob remembering his life and young Jacob living that life is done well and the reader doesn't feel mislead. The ending is sweet and not that much a surprise. This is a comfort read for me. Nice, well written, I learn things and I'm entertained. Pretty good combination. Almost 4 stars.
