I'm rereading Holmes in the original text in 2009. I've read Doyle in French translated over 20 years ago. I'm reading in order. So first in the pile is "A Study in Scarlet. Where we meet Dr. Watson, Holmes, how they came to be friends, to live at 221B Baker Street and their very first adventure in crime solving. It's the discovery from Watson's eye of an amazing individual, with its quirks and faults. The hero worship from Watson, Holmes' ego all wrapped up in a well constructed plot (it does have some very big coincidences but you can't have everything) make A Study in Scarlet a nice reread. This edition had a 53 pages introduction and a 72 pages appendix full of historical notes. My kind of edition needless to say I read the introduction and checked out the notes just for fun.
