Almost 5 stars. Really, this is by far the best novel I've read this year, The Silver Branch a close second. The pacing is good, Sutcliff shows, rarely tells. She gives us a hero that is full of pain and angst but finds his way out of the darkness and the hopelessness. Many many wonderful parts that bring either pride and joy or tears as you read. The lighting of the tower as the last of the Eagles leave the shore of Briton, finding what you thought was lost and losing her again. Finding love but not seeing it for what it is, repaying a debt by sending back what is most cherished. So many wonderful things all wrapped up into this epic struggle to survive as a nation, as people. I loved it, truly. Rosemary Sutcliff is a good, solid storyteller, add that she has a wonderful way with words and you get an author who doesn't disappoint.
